I got OOMA 10 years ago and never had even a hint of a problem. I can move and take my number with me. I just take my oooma modem and plug it in and I’m up and running.

I have AT&T because they're the only ones that provide the land lines here in a rural area in Cali. I have low bandwidth and many times the internet 'goes out' - during storms, it can be out for days and we depend on land lines. During fire season, they cut power and that cuts the internet. Will Google Voice be an option under these conditions?

Multiple Year Update: I built a PC, rebuilt it, rebuilt it again for various upgrades, was no longer limited by a gaming laptops' refresh rate, went from bottom 0.1% in overwatch to top 0.0001%, became a T3 player and collegiate coach, got within a stone's throw of a guaranteed 30k salary in T2 play, watched the scene die, had my $62 ebay chromebook cheer me on through it all, wondering if I should have even pursued esports if I wasn't able to get to the end goal before I ran out of time financially and college-wise, and now I'm typing on this from the same good old chromebook, with my desktop build being a mere second desk for medication. Do I regret following this advice? No, because my posture is immaculate from my featherweight chromebook, and I never had to worry about noise or battery life of a massive gaming laptop. My only regret is that I didn't try harder. gg

im on a program were the state pays my phone bill. i had to drop long distance . for a long time i used calling cards . ugh. now i use google voice for long distance, and i have texting from computer to mobiles .

I remember working at call centre, the one thing I took from working there is the retention department have insane deals to keep customers. One customer had ridiclous amount of credit applied to their account that they were pay maxiuam of $5 - 20 for mutiple services(Home phone, Internet and tv services) .

Missed an important point that a landline phone works when there is no electricity which VOIP & internet require.

Buy a laptop, mouse and keyboard. Setup with your keyboard and mouse in one spot or bring the laptop solo on the go. I got a laptop because then I can bring it all over instead of just being stuck in one spot... That, and everyone else has laptops and in study groups I don't wonna be the only person with a phone in a circle of laptops. Also, who wants to game in the same spot every day? I used to do that, now I can imagine not going where ever I want to game.

Such a shame that even now google hasn't rolled this out internationally

Actually, my magic jack is connected to my modem, so I still turn my computer off every night, and power outages don't affect it. My problem with MagicJack is that in the last couple of years, it has started dropping a lot of calls. Very annoying to be talking with someone and not even know that they are suddenly gone until you figure out that they are not responding. Yeah, I'm ready for a switch, but it won't be to Google.

Im dealing with a 42" TV and only found 2 companies that make 40" versions. I got a $70 40" sync box and it has no power switch on it, uses a phone app, needs my wifi password and also has a microphone installed on it for voice commands... i feel like its listening to me lol. I got another 40" sync box for $189 and its so much better. Has a power switch on the box, a normal LED remote with a power button, color buttons, different modes, the LED strip itself also has twice the amount of LEDs on it than the $70 brand.

I bought a gaming laptop Dell G15 a year ago, it was at a great price during the promotion. And now it always got very hot, and recently the WIFI does not work, and then the Bluetooth. I've done some research online, and it seems like some parts have been heated to wear out, or getting lose because of the heat. I still remember my old HP Pavillion, which lasted for 6 years, and never got that problem. I won't buy a gaming laptop ever.

Loved this video, DeV! I'm trying to help my senior parents cut their landline, for which they are paying nearly $60/mo (incl. $16 in taxes!) in addition to their internet. I'm researching the option of switching them over to Google Talk. Question...my mother relies heavily on their answering machine, as they have difficulty using the voicemail on their smartphones. Can you use a traditional digital answering machine system with Google Talk? Thank you for your very informative video! I'm a teacher and I must say you present information in a way that regular, every day (aka "non techie types") people can understand!!
